Body Moulding - ‘Mum-to-be’ Kit
Basic Technique
Tummy and chest are covered with vaseline, then the bandaging is applied as
a thin poultice. This sets in 15 minutes-or-so and although the result is a solid veil, it captures your
shape perfectly - and can hold a surprising amount of detail. The best time for making the mould is really whenever you think you look your best, and that might be anywhere between 24 and 36 weeks - after that, posing
can be too uncomfortable and shapeliness can become vastness.
The bandage used is ‘modroc’ - a pre-coated plaster gauze (it’s also used in making fracture casts); the material becomes soft and pasty when moistened and is then applied to the skin and kneaded/stretched to follow the body's contours. The process requires an assistant - a partner and/or close friend(s), and there is plenty of material in the kit for you as well as your helper(s) to practise and experiment with. The instruction sheet includes lots of suggestions about preparation and getting the right pose.
Some women want just a belly-cast, but most like to have the bust included - perhaps partly
covered by hand(s) and arm(s), or a hand laid across the tummy - and some like to include the upper thighs. The final piece can be decorated or left plain, or can even be 'dressed'. The final look can be as fun, expressive, natural, modest or saucy as you want it it to be. As a rule though, don't take in too much of the neck or thighs - it’s the swellings at the front you want to capture - and avoid
clinical, straight lines. There is a tremendous variation in the shapes of mums-to-be, so do as
much or as little as brings out the best in you.
Decorating, etc.
The kit includes spare plaster (for filling vulnerable or thin areas from behind) and a sealer; as well as making it stronger, the sealer helps to bind the surface and acts as a primer, making it much easier to decorate the mould. Nursery scenes, cartoon and animal motifs are very popular, but in the right lighting and position, a plain, single colour can be very effective.
